42PF9831 - One TV to Rule Them All…
March 6th, 2006
Just read the Philips pressrelease regarding their focus on Ambilight Full Surround. While they say that the full surround will be the KEY technology in the new FlatTV lineups, it seems that only the 42PF9831D has Full Surround; The 32/37/42 PF9731 only have a 3rd light on top, not fully surround.
As noted before, I want the PF9831 w/ full surround, but it seems that the 42″ version will be the only one available (soon), can’t find any references to smaller models yet.
But nevertheless, the 42″ seems to be the way to go! Some random buzzwords from their leaflet:
- High-definition LCD WXGA display, 1366 x 768p
- Integrated Digital Tuner for DVB-T reception
- Pixel Plus 3 HD, Ambilight Full Surround and Clear LCD technology.
I like the integrated Digital Tuner, but no 1920 x 1080p…
No confirmed dates yet for these TV’s though. Philips pressreleases earlier this year mention june/july for a US launch, more and more other sites mention later dates. If anyone finds more information, please let me know!
Read more about this (and other stuff) in my Gadgets category.
On a more personal note: I’m off to Curaçao for two weeks, Have fun!

Guten Tag,

Hi,
The 42PF9831D has been released over here in Ireland. I’m pretty sure there’s no plan in the future for this full ambilight to be released in the smaller sizes and I have to say I don’t see why they should. This is a total statement TV. To get a 37″ or a 32″ with the full ambilight surround and the more than substantial frame on it would be like getting a Ferrari paint job on a Mini Cooper. It’s fairly impressive to see though and I have to say the 3 sided ambilight on the smaller modals does give the extra va va voom you’d want in your set. As for the 1920 x 1080 res? The 37PF9830 is extremely impressive when you see it with a pure HD signal but unfortunately for those of us unlucky enough to only have digital TV this puppy tries to upscale everything to 1920 x 1080. As a result you see a very noisy and distorted picture sometimes. I guess I’m happy enough with one plus for one minus. All in all I think they’re both great sets. Nice job on the site by the way.
