T3 reviews 42PF9831

Saturday, July 29th, 2006

Today I got the new T3 (September issue… WTF?!) in the mail, in which they reviewed the 42PF9831. It said “The best plasma TV yet” on the cover, I’ll forgive them this slip :)

A few excerpts from the review:

  • While its predecessors had 1,920×1,080p panels, this one reverts to a lower resolution (1,366×768), but the picture is actually markedly better than before.
  • We’ve never seen the final battle in Return of the King nlook as fantastic as it doe here in upscaled DVD.
  • The black levels are amazing for an LCD, and speckles of background noise are eliminated.

LOVE Excellent black levels. Great standard and Hi-Def picture quality. Ambilight Full Surround gives it a real “wow” factor.
HATE Odd-looking white backing board. No ClearLCD for Hi-Def material.
WE SAY The best jumbo LCD telly around.

  • It will come as no suprise that this review confirms what I already thought: “I’m going to buy this one!”, but I’ll wait till I’m moved over to my new appartment. Now if only somebody would buy my current appartment.

    BlackBerry 8707v

    Tuesday, July 25th, 2006

w00t w00t, a new gadget! After my ‘old’ BlackBerry broke down, I got a new one today, the 8707v. 16 bit colors, UMTS, built-in 3G modem, quad-band etc. Was introduced just something like a week ago in the Netherlands, I feel soooo bad that the other one just broke down… :D

Really like to ‘today’ screen with a quick overview of unread messages/SMS, next items from your calendar and quick access to other stuff. And FINALLY they added a key combination (ALT-ENTER) to lock it, no longer scrolling your apps and selecting the wrong one.

Only negative thing is that it still won’t do Bluetooth data connections, so my TomTom still can’t download traffic data :( Fix this, dammit!

Overall, for me, it’s a keeper!

Sotfware Updates available for 42pf9831 and 37pf9731

    Sunday, July 23rd, 2006

Was just browsing the Philips site, and noticed that a couple of new files had appeared in the download-folder, including the first software update. The same update is available for the 37pf9731 as well.

I (almost) made up my mind and will go for the 42″ version. As someone commented already, it’s all about how the TV software will handle the upscaling/downscaling of the images, not on the number of pixels per se. The UK magazine Home Cinema Choice did a review of the 42pf9831, and they basically said it’s the best LCD out on the market today.

Now I just have to wait for the keys to my new appartment before ordering this beauty (together with the HTS9800W, pictured on the left), as it won’t fit in my current one :)

    Extrema Outdoor 2006

    Monday, July 17th, 2006

Yeah, I survived Extrema Outdoor 2006! 13 hours of sun, dance, booze and beautiful ppl (well, most of them). Too bad the lines for the afterparty where too long, and that I somehow managed to get a 10 cm long bruise on my right leg ?! Oh well…

    See a short impression below:

    Wijntje ?!

Today my South African Wines arrived I ordered when visiting South Africa a couple of months ago. 24 bottles of Glen Carlou Grand Classique 2003, 24 bottles of Glen Carlou Syrah 2004 and 24 bottles of Rust en Vrede Shiraz 2001.

The tasting notes say I better keep these wines on the shelf for atleast a couple of years, but somehow I doubt I’m going to make it :)
