Universal Remote

July 5th, 2006

My god, I’m a sucker for marketing traps (aka gullible). Yesterday I got a newsletter email from Philips, discussing the 42PF9831 (you might have seen me write about it). Ofcourse I read it, thinking “oh well”, but they also discussed a universal remote. No, not Click (baaaaaad movie), but the SRU9600.

Today I bought one online…

Justified it as being in preparation for all the new stuff I’m gonna buy when moving into my new apartment :)

I’ve asked Philips for a list of the 1100 systems it can operate last friday.
I’ve seen many of these “universal” remotes, most of them happen to miss a lot of systems in their database. Sure, you could use the “learn from other remote” function, but I aint paying like €90 just to spend evenings with several remotes on the table getting frustrated because I can’t get the universal one to accept the “hold down fast forward” function.

    Update:
Philips responded they dont have a list, but I could use the learing function.
    Yeah, duh.
