Nedap Combi Outlet : UTP & Coax

Friday, December 19th, 2008

Today is the almost the first day of the rest of my life, as this is my last official working day with Zylom, the company I co-founded. After 7.5 years, almost 3 years after we sold the company, I’m ready for a new challenge.

BUT, first I’m going to hack my home :)

And for this, I’m a beta-tester of the new Nedap Combi Outlet: it combines both UTP (Cat 5e) as well as Coax (RG6) in a single outlet. I searched around, and it seems nobody else has this kind of outlet available.
ISDN/Coax combi outlets, or Coax/UTP till 100 Mbps are already available, but this one combines gigabit speed together with std. RG6. Hoefully they will be available soon for normal distribution, as I think more ppl do want to have them.

Sometimes the best ideas seem so simple…

Inhouse network upgrade

Thursday, December 4th, 2008

Darn you Boxee… You’re costing me quite a lot of money:

  • To enable wireless streaming of DVDs I hasd to upgrade my network to the Draft n, so I added a Dlink 655 wireless router
  • To be able to store all my ripped DVDs, I just bought a QNAP TS-509 Pro together with 5x the Seagate 1.5TB Barracuda (in a RAID 5 setup), giving me 5495.47 GB of storage space.

I’m now hacking my QNAP to support extraction of .iso images (so I can also download backup copies of my movies). This was a bit harder than I initially tought (mount -t iso9660 was not supported), so, in short:

  • Install & enable ipkg
  • Install cdrtools, perl (& vim while you’re at it)
  • Download the uniso script from Morphix and patch it to get it working (diff)

I now can start downloads, extract iso’s and stream all my ripped DVDs from my AppleTV using Boxee! Now I just need to find two more AppleTVs for cheap :)
