Boxee - A free Kaleidescape alternative ?

Wednesday, November 26th, 2008

For the last couple of years, I’ve been buying quite a few DVD’s. However, I’m buying less and less lately, partly because I don’t know where to store them anymore and partly because I want to have them available when I want (like the On Demand features), and not wanting to physically search for them.

After our appartment has been redesigned, I decided not to have a DVD player in the room anymore, especially when I discovered Boxee, an open, connected, social media centre, which was now available for AppleTV as well.

So now I’m ripping all my DVD’s in full format to disk, playing them via Boxee on my AppleTV. I think this might become the perfect alternative for Kaleidescape, the $15.000 home entertainment system on which I’ve been drooling for a while.

It’s currently in Alpha state, on invitation only, for Mac, Linux & AppleTV. Got any of these and want to try it out ? Let me know in the comments.

Reconstruction 2008 - ALMOST ready.

Friday, November 14th, 2008

After 4 weeks, the reconstruction of our apartment is ALMOST done. Lot’s of new colors, corners, cabinet, kitchen and, most importantly, gadgets :) (Like our Elica Twin kitchenhood and our Busch-Jaeger Touchpanel).

Final details are most likely done next week, but we can live in our house again!

The Death of HD-DVD : Final hours

Wednesday, October 15th, 2008

Was visiting the MediaMarkt today, and noticed that they had exactly ONE HD-DVD left (it was on sale!), compared to hundreds of blu-ray’s. Was witnessing HD-DVD’s final hours, almost felt compelled to buy that last one. Was King Kong though… :)

Now, yesterday I found john.he.is’s response :)

Tesla Roadster

Saturday, June 30th, 2007

Some of my co-workers drive a specific car brand, and I must say I’m inclined to buy one myself.

However, during a business trip to Denmark last week, somebody told me about the Tesla Roadster. 0-60mph in less than 4 seconds (faster than a standard Porsche!), 130mph peak (fast enough) and looking very good (like the Lotus Elise, another car I’m looking into).

So, what’s the catch ? This sports car of your green dreams is a plug-in electric vehicle… Not a Hybrid, electricity all the way!

As they said on Top Gear: “I know that will have got a couple of groans from the audience. But bear with me here, as this isn’t like any of those horribly cynical early efforts. The ones produced by global car companies trying to deflect attention from their tree-flattening SUV money-makers. This one’s different. No, really, it is. “

I’m seriously considering this. I’m not an environmentalist at all, but this one looks nice, is (somewhat) affordable, and will be faster (for the first mile(s)) than these bloudy 911’s :D Too bad it has a waitinglist till next year, and only available in the US for now, however, there might be a way to get and import it… Let’s see what the RDW has to say on this.
